Game Jam, and January Meeting (11/1/11)

06 Jan

Hey all,

GAME JAM IS ALMOST HERE! We’re all very excited to be bringing this to you, and it’s looking to be EPIC. It’s not too late to be a part of the fun, but places are extremely limited so get in asap.

Use the form below to register all your details if you want to take part in the Jam , which is being held on January 28th to 30th at La Trobe University, Bundoora (and come on, who doesn’t want to be part of it?)

Make sure you come along to this Tuesday’s meeting (11/1/11, 7:30pm to 10pm, at 3 Degrees bar (an over-18′s venue) in QV, Melbourne CBD). We will be giving out all the goss on what will be happening over the weekend, who might be popping in to observe (special guests aplenty), and who the judging panel will be as well. It’s also a great chance to meet other people who will be at the Jam, and see who you may end up working with.

Even if you’re not going to be jamming, come along for a chat with your fellow devs, and see what everyone’s been up to over the summer break.

Any questions, email us on info@igdamelbourne.org and we’ll get right back to you.

UPDATE: Registrations have closed, as of Tuesday 18/1/11 at 5pm. No further applications will be accepted after that time. We’ve had a huge show of interest in the event, and it’s looking to be great! We’ll be in touch with registered jammers directly via email.

The plans for the party are underway – and numbers are filling fast.

We’ve got the food – HUUUUUGE shoutout to AUTODESK for sponsoring the tucker and who also have some super-amazing deals for ‘lil ‘ole IGDA Melbourne folk – so get in touch with Paul Hellyer if you’re looking to upgrade by Jan 18

We’ve got hmmm, a few drinks I guess – so if you feel like sponsoring the bar of what is sure to be a memorable party, please , contact giselle@igdamelbourne.org – I’d love to hear from you and make it that a top arvo is had by all.

Have no fear, it’ll all happen – but any and all support is welcome.

If you work for any of the tagged companies which we do our best to support we’d love your involvement – and it seems from the rsvp’s we’ll see some of most of you there.

Yiyi Wang (Creative Director, Cookon):  Design and marketing

Coming from a design background, I’d like to share my experience in design and marketing. Cokoon is a Design Consultancy based in Melbourne. We specialise in Digital Design and provide quality Design Solutions for businesses and organisations. We has been working on client projects on day to day basis, whether to help them launch a new product, a new service or just simply promote their business. I will present Positive Posters project, and how important it is to make everything user-friendly, and how we can learn from web applications to make it easier for players to learn and play your game.

Courtney Kim (http://courtneykim NULL.com/) : the importance of graphic design in game

A Melbourne based accomplished designer, illustrator with a passion for socially beneficial artistic enterprises Courtney will discuss the importance of graphic design in games; that interface and advertising can be as important to sales as how good the game is.

She’s also a nuts Korean Starcraft fanatic and great designer.  Born in Germany and raised in South Korea she studied Bachelor of Multimedia and Digital Arts at Monash University. As a director of creative agency called Symphonic Pixels (http://symphonicpixels NULL.com/), Courtney has a flair for web, digital art, interactivity, motion graphics and illustration. She has a passion for working and collaborating with clients, who celebrates their cultural diversity, advance the pursuit of knowledge, and sharing her entrepreneurial spirit through creative project.  Her works communicate to audiences of what she truly loves and admires and games are one of her passions.

Rhys Sullivan: Monetising your game

Rhys has worked in the advergames space for the last 5 years for agencies including Spin Communications and M&C Saatchi. He’d like to talk about his experience in such and tell people they can make games, and make good money at the same time, through different avenues.

Rhys Sullivan is freelance Flash developer with around 6 years of experience in many areas of the digital industry. Australian born but having lived in countries as diverse as Papua New Guinea and Chile, he initially trained as an archaeologist, but after having worked through a harsh Irish winter was seduced by the digital industry’s non-exposure to the elements. He then studied graphic design in Brisbane, before getting a job as a Flash developer in Stockholm, Sweden. Returning to Melbourne he’s worked for agencies such as M&C Saatchi, Publicis Mojo, and digital studios including Visual Jazz and Boffswana. His work has focused on flash game development, as well as highly dynamic and experiential platforms that require advanced programming solutions.

And, in case you need more reasons to come along, there’ll be a beer raffle and massive game jam announcements :D

Open Mic Night #2 more info

04 Oct

Our second Open Mic night kicks off tomorrow at the newly adopted 3 Degrees Bar in the QV Centre (see below for details)

Anyone is welcome to put their hand up for a spot at the microphone.  We already have a selection of speakers talking about where they’re at developing their game, putting out a call for testers and App developers.

David Thompson, from Tiberian Sun Rising, will be giving a post-Freeplay update.  They’re close to release and are looking for some good sound people.

Chris Watts, from Play Bit Entertainment, has a short term job posting he’d like to promote and Giselle (yes, your humble author) is on the lookout for an App Developer.

Rob Caporretto is after testers and will also share details about this on the night…

In the wake of the new Unity release, Ben Britten will  talk for all of 38 seconds about the Unity google group that’s been set up.

And finally (so far) Finn Morgan will be talking about his new game, Colourblind, and is keen for feedback.

Ok, more finally (that’s what happens when you update stuff) Brad Giblin from FilmVic may have a delicious announcement too!

Ok more, more finally (edit number two)  we’ll meet the blokes behind Rubber House Studio http://www.rubberhousestudio.com/.

We’ll keep you updated with any other speakers that put their hand up before the night,  But you’ll just have to come along to see what other goodies are in store.

It’s been a while since the last one, so now it’s time to try out the mic at our new home: 3 Degrees (3D for short!) in the QV Centre.

When: Tuesday 5 October from 7.30pm, the mic turns on at 8 8)

Where: 3 Degrees, QV Centre, cnr Swanston & Lonsdale Sts, Melbourne

Whether you want a turn at the mic or just to hear what others have to say and to catch up with like-minded game makers,  come along for what’s always a night of gamery goodness.

You don’t need to register your spot at the mic, but you can email info@igdamelbourne.org with your ideas or any questions you may have.  If we get details beforehand of some of the talks to expect we’ll send them out over the inter-tubes beforehand.

Q: What’s going on this meet up? A: Heaps

06 Sep

…..and she’s back after a hectic Open Day season I’m glad to be helping the IGDA crew once again, albeit 23 hours before the next meet up.

It’s a bit of a taster’s plate this month, with the main course being some delicious morsels of GCAP goodness (I think I might be hungry, but I digress)

WHEN: Tuesday 7 September 7.30pm onwards (yep, that’d be tomorrow/tonight/you’ve already missed it)

WHERE: 3 Degrees Bar (http://www NULL.3degrees NULL.com NULL.au/), located in the QV cnr Swanston & Lonsdale Sts

WHAT:

Tony Reed will give us an update about how GCAP’s shaping up (might be time to look for some cheap flights north)

Martin Wilkes will treat us to the low-down on FMOD as well as some government-based (we still have one somehow, right?) initiatives that will be of interest to some games folk out there

No doubt discussions will be around the current state of play in Oz, so it’s also good to look at the new evolving options out there for game creators in their many forms; we’ll kick around more ideas on studio and salon setups, cross skilling, upskilling, Game Jam, art exhibitions and lots more…. so there should be something there for everyone!

NEW VENUE:

Yep, the kind folk of 3 Degrees have agreed to take us, and have offered a slab of beer as a door prize for tomorrow night, as well as their specials drink list:

$5 Glasses of Wine of the Month – Hardy’s Nottage Hill Chardonnay/Shiraz

$5 Bottles of Crown Lager

$5 Bottles of Beer of the Month – Dry Dock Lager

$5 Spirit of the Month – Johhny Red (unless sold out – then they’re all something else…)

Any queries, we’ll be keeping an eye on the facebook event (http://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/?sk=events#!/event NULL.php?eid=109394082451166)(and will soon be updating the whole facebook thang to encourage dialogue), and @igdamelbourne will be in twitterland on the day – join the chirping :)

I’ve personally been looking forward to this one since March, so I hope to see you there, you can tell me all about Freeplay  :D  -Giselle
