There’s worse things than losing a job…ask Kate

20 Nov

Ok, so we can all go through tough times, and do the best we can.  Tough times are when you need your friends, family and community the most.

Kate Inabinet, former Blue Tongue Animator, mother and cancer survivor,  is having a tough time. (https://docs NULL.google NULL.com/document/pub?id=1BPkr5bGrXt1F5D6n-wwitWMSs9j1Fc6xRR_s_VB6pg8) If current plans to restrict the provision of the medication that can make her life bearable is upheld,  it may as well be forfeit in her eyes.

I’d like to urge you to support Kate, by hearing her story (https://docs NULL.google NULL.com/document/pub?id=1BPkr5bGrXt1F5D6n-wwitWMSs9j1Fc6xRR_s_VB6pg8) and signing a petition (http://www NULL.change NULL.org/petitions/the-australian-medical-board-prevent-desiccated-thyroid-product-being-restricted-in-australia) to stop the restriction of Desiccated Thyroid or Thyroid Extract (the complex restriction details can be viewed here (https://docs NULL.google NULL.com/document/pub?id=1y2Djsfe77DNbmaQkJcu-5S0opzKpqnzck1BAmmO_SIY)).

This is the only drug currently on the market that makes Kate’s life bearable.

In Kate’s words

“My name is Kate. I am 38 years old. I live in Melbourne with my loving partner, 2 hilarious cats and my glorious little 3 year old boy who is my entire world. I have a family and friends whom I love, and who love me, and I’m not ready to leave any of them. Especially over something that is so easily remedied.

“Please help me raise awareness for my cause by signing my petition and send this message to everyone you know, asking them to do the same…. for those who don’t know me, or care about me or my plight in any way shape or form, just stop for a moment and imagine if it was your mum who was going through this …and her life was in my hands.”

I’m always so impressed with how our community can band together when needed. It’s needed now (http://www NULL.change NULL.org/petitions/the-australian-medical-board-prevent-desiccated-thyroid-product-being-restricted-in-australia).

Spider senses are tingling today

28 Oct

Renowned gamebook writer, Jonathan Green, brings Gamebook Adventures into the next
generation with the seventh book in the highly acclaimed digital interactive fantasy fiction
series. Temple of the Spider God is now available from the App Store, starting at a sale price of
USD$2.99 as a treat for fans and early adopters.
Jonathan Green is best known for his contributions to the legendary gamebook series, Fighting
Fantasy, as well as plying his trade in the Star Wars and Doctor Who universes. Jon is very
excited to work with Tin Man Games on his first digital gamebook. “It’s a real thrill to be able to
share it with the rest of the world at last.” He said.
Temple of the Spider God is an interactive reading experience in which the reader chooses the
direction of the story on each page. Set in the same fantasy world as the first six gamebooks,
the reader controls a character on the search for a famed explorer who disappeared on his last
great expedition. The reader’s character will uncover a sinister plot and meet strange creatures
which will need to be fought with Gamebook Adventures’ realistic dice rolling battle system.
Combined with stunning illustrations and a beautiful soundtrack, Jon sums it up best: “It’s the
first book of mine to have its own them tune! What’s not to love?”
The arrival of the seventh book by Tin Man Games heralds the beginning of a new era for the
Melbourne based team. The gamebook technology been completely overhauled to add more
flexibility to tackle new projects based on other gamebook and role-playing systems.

Alongside the new release, Tin Man Games is also announcing the first of these new projects, namely a collaboration with Greywood Publishing, a publisher of print-based role-playing book
in the UK. They have teamed up with the legendary gamebook illustrator, Gary Chalk – most
famous for his work on the Lone Wolf series – to create a brand new gamebook series based in
a new setting. “It’s great to be able to work on the creation of a world and then go on to
illustrate your own bizarre inventions”, says Gary.
Entitled Gun Dogs, the series will be one of the first of a series of announcements by Tin Man
Games over the coming months, who have signed a number of deals with writers and license
holders to create new digital gamebook properties. Jamie Wallis from Greywood, for one, is
very excited by the new collaboration and says, “We are looking forward to it and raring to go!”
Gamebook Adventures: The Temple of the Spider God is available to download from the App
Store now and normally costs USD$4.99. As a special promotion for its release, all seven
Gamebook Adventures titles are on sale for a limited time. Gun Dogs will appear sometime in
2012.
Gamebook Adventures has a new website which can be accessed at
www.GamebookAdventures.com (http://gamebookadventures NULL.com/) as well as a developer blog at www.TinManGames.com.au (http://tinmangames NULL.com NULL.au/blog/).
The Gamebook Adventures Facebook group is also regularly updated with the latest news.

PhD openings in the Exertion Games Lab at RMIT in Melbourne, Australia

03 Oct

The Exertion Games Lab (exertiongameslab.org (http://exertiongameslab NULL.org/)) in Melbourne, Australia,
is seeking exceptional PhD candidates to research the future of
exertion games and play.

The Exertion Games Lab is a new lab that researches the future of
gaming in order to understand how to design better interactive
experiences, in particular games that require intense physical effort
from players. We call it the intersection between gaming and sports.
Our research is focused on the merging of play and the active human
body, drawing from research streams such as interaction design, human-
computer interaction and computer games research.

The culture in the Exertion Games Lab is one of interdisciplinary
work. At the Exertion Games Lab, we do not just philosophize and write
about the future, we actively invent it. We emphasize the development
of working prototypes in order to fully understand what play is, why
we play, and how we will play in the future. We do this because we
believe playing and gaming is a fundamental part of what makes us
humans who we are, and an understanding of this brings us closer to
our vision of a better world filled with interactive technologies that
support human values.

We are looking for exceptional candidates who value an
interdisciplinary perspective, are highly motivated, willing to learn
a variety of new skills, can think outside the box, are creative as
well as technical, and also have highly developed analytical and
communicative skills.
We are offering a great open-plan lab environment in the Design Hub,
Australia’s newest interdisciplinary design center at RMIT (Royal
Melbourne Institute of Technology), where we work together to invent
the future of exertion games, with great support for physical game
prototyping and international collaborations. You will be supervised
by me, Florian ‘Floyd’ Mueller; I have created the lab based on my
experiences from working across 3 continents at research labs such as
MIT’s Media Lab, Media Lab Europe, Xerox Parc, Fuji Xerox, Microsoft
Research Asia, the University of Melbourne, CSIRO and Stanford
University.

Unlike most other countries, RMIT’s PhDs in the Exertion Games Lab
take only 3 years, they require a 4-year degree or a Masters
(exceptions if you have work experience etc.), and there are many
different scholarships available that can cover both tuition and
living expenses: http://rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=igf2sdssaler1 (http://rmit NULL.edu NULL.au/browse;ID=igf2sdssaler1)
(International students will be mostly looking at RUIRS, and
Australian/New Zealand citizens at APA. There is also jason.edu.au (http://jason NULL.edu NULL.au/) for
more scholarships, and your home country might also offer scholarships
to conduct PhD research overseas, for example we have had great
experiences with DAAD and Fulbright.)

Also, applications for a PhD work a bit different than in most other
countries: You can apply anytime, but in order to be considered for
most scholarships, you will need to have your application in before
the 28 Oct 2011 (note time-difference!) for a start date of early/mid
2012. But before you submit your application, you will need to have
convinced us in the Exertion Games Lab to support your application.
So in order to support your application, please send us in reply to
this email your CV, a cover letter with what you would like to
research with your PhD, and why, and a link to your portfolio,
including any research papers you might have written. In your
portfolio, we will be looking at your potential for creativity,
excellence and drive in relation to Exertion Games. If we like what we
see, we will then underwrite your application that you will send to
the central RMIT University PhD application system.

We should also mention that you will be doing your PhD right in the
heart of the world’s most livable city, Melbourne:
http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1583116/melbourne-judged-world-s-most-livable-city (http://www NULL.sbs NULL.com NULL.au/news/article/1583116/melbourne-judged-world-s-most-livable-city)

Here is what Wired said about us recently:
http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2011/09/exertion-games-lab-where-physical-meets-digital/ (http://www NULL.wired NULL.com/geekdad/2011/09/exertion-games-lab-where-physical-meets-digital/)

Looking forward to reading your applications!
Thanks,
Floyd
